Diagnosis: Idiopathic scoliotic spinal deformity in adulthood. Right-sided rib hump.
When every movement causes pain, life gradually narrows to a struggle for just one more day.
Hanna is 47 years old. For many years she has lived with a severe spinal deformity. Due to old injuries and years of heavy physical work, her condition has steadily worsened. Today the pain has become almost constant.
Doctors say it clearly: without surgery the disease will continue to progress and her condition will only worsen.
Hanna has already been assigned the first non-working disability group.
Hanna’s letter:
“I was left alone with my misfortune. Many years ago I suffered spinal injuries. Because of this a severe illness developed, and the pain is constant and exhausting.
Doctors insist on urgent surgery.
I have a son and I live only for him. My greatest dream is to live to see the day when he marries and creates his own family.
I believe that kindness returns…”
Why this surgery is critically important
Scoliotic spinal deformity is not just a curved back.
In adulthood, severe scoliosis often continues to progress by 1–3° every year, gradually destroying the spine.
This leads to:
• constant severe pain
• nerve compression
• walking difficulties
• loss of ability to work
• serious health problems in the future
In severe cases, the only way to stop the progression is surgical spinal correction.
After such operations most patients:
• experience significant pain reduction
• improve mobility
• regain the ability to live normally.
In many European countries such surgeries are covered by health insurance systems. Their cost there often reaches tens of thousands of dollars.
In Ukraine expensive implants are often not funded by the state.
Surgery for Hanna
Doctors recommend a complex surgery:
Correction of scoliotic deformity (category 4)
• 20–25 titanium implants
• Medtronic / NovaSpine system
• 14 days of hospitalization
During the operation surgeons install special screws and rods that straighten and stabilize the spine.
This is a complex surgery, but it can stop the progression of the disease and give Hanna the chance to live without constant pain again.
How much is needed
Cost of the surgery:
15 100 euros (calculated according to the exchange rate on the day of hospitalization).
For Hanna this amount is impossible to afford.
